Georgia Eye Partners First in State to Offer Epithelium-on EpiOxa Crosslinking
Posted by: Georgia Eye Partners in News and Updates
We are proud to share three of our ophthalmologists are the first in the state to offer epithelium-on EpiOxa crosslinking, an advanced FDA-approved treatment for keratoconus. The procedure is available to patients at Georgia Eye Partners’ Northside and Woodstock locations and will be performed by renowned doctors Evan D. Schoenberg, M.D., Andrew Feinberg, M.D., and Nichelle Warren, M.D.

What Is Keratoconus?
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, keratoconus causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone shape, creating blurry, distorted vision that can significantly affect daily activities. Without timely intervention, the condition can continue to worsen, sometimes leading to significant visual impairment that affects driving, reading, and overall quality of life.
Doctors aren’t entirely sure what causes keratoconus. It’s often considered to be genetic, as about one in ten people have a parent with the condition. It usually first appears in the late teenage years or early twenties.
How the Epithelium-on EpiOxa Crosslinking Works
Epithelium‑on EpiOxa crosslinking strengthens the cornea without removing the epithelial layer.By combining a specialized riboflavin solution, UV light, and oxygen to enhance penetration, this technique offers several advantages over traditional “epi-off” crosslinking.
Key benefits compared to traditional methods:
- Improved Comfort: Preserving the epithelium results in significantly less discomfort during and after the procedure.
- Faster Recovery: Patients experience shorter downtime and quicker visual recovery.
- Reduced Risk of Complications: Lower likelihood of haze, scarring, and infection relative to epithelium-off techniques.
A Milestone for Georgia in Advanced Vision Care
We are proud to introduce this milestone treatment in advanced ophthalmic care for our patients with keratoconus. Epithelium‑on EpiOxa crosslinking is the next‑generation approach to not only helping slow the progression of this disease, it also enhances the comfort and safety of our patients during and after treatment.
At Georgia Eye Partners, our mission has always been to ensure our patients and community have access to the most advanced vision technologies available.
