Implantable Contact Lenses

The surgeons at Georgia Eye Partners offer two types of implantable contact lenses.  At any time, give us a call at (404) 531-9988 to schedule your evaluation and ask any questions you may have.

Visian ICL

What is the Visian ICL?

The Visian ICL, also known as the implantable collamer lens, is a lens to help correct nearsightedness. For years, the only method that did not involve glasses or contacts was corrective laser eye surgery. With the advent of the Visian ICL, however, that has all changed. For people who value health and wellness the Visian ICL could be the choice for you. The collamer base of the lens material is 100% biocompatible, meaning it is designed to function in harmony with your body’s chemistry.

Good Candidates for the Visian ICL
If you are nearsighted, have had stable vision for a year, and are between the ages of 21 and 45, you are an excellent candidate for the Visian ICL. The Visian ICL is made to help correct patients with low myopia (-3 diopters) to high myopia (-20 diopters). Not only is the Visian ICL good for candidates with high myopia, but it may be the perfect option for people who are suffering from severe dry eye or have thin corneas. The Visian ICL is a simple 15-minute outpatient procedure that has a fast recovery time. One main difference that separates Visian ICL from LASIK and PRK is that the Visian ICL does not use a laser to reshape the corneal surface of the eye.

Recovery Time
The recovery time for the Visian ICL is very quick, comfortable, and may be as little as a day, due to the small size of the incision made during the procedure. The tiny incision needed to implant the foldable Visian ICL is located on the far edge of the cornea, where there is little danger of it interfering with vision. Once the lens is implanted, sutures are typically not needed to close the incision, further simplifying the procedure.

Precise Vision Correction with a Legacy of Success
Visian ICL has been approved in Europe since 1997 and in the U.S. since 2005. In that time, over 500,000 Visian ICLs have been implanted by certified, specialized surgeons with studies showing a 99% patient satisfaction rate.

Verisyse Phakic Intraocular Lens

The Verisyse lens is a proven solution for Georgia Eye Partners patients who are not candidates for refractive surgery (Lasik or PRK) due to their corneal shape or large prescriptions. Leading this technology is Andrew Feinberg, M.D., who was chosen by Abbott Medical Optics to be one of the first surgeons to implant the lens in the United States in 2004. The Verisyse IOL has been tested and successfully used in Europe since 1990. Clinical studies in the U.S. began in 1997 and ended in 2003 with over 1,000 lenses being implanted in over 500 patients. Over 84% of patients achieved 20/40 vision or better without the use of glasses or contact lenses.

This IOL is designed to reduce or eliminate high myopia (nearsightedness). At this time it is not approved by the FDA for the correction of hyperopia (farsightedness). Verisyse lenses are indicated for treatment ranging from -5.00 to -20.0 diopters of myopia. The Verisyse IOL does not eliminate the need for reading glasses in patients older than 45 years of age. In these patients that have presbyopia, other presbyopic correcting IOLs are available that can offer near and distance vision without the need to use glasses or contacts.

If you are nearsighted and would enjoy the freedom of seeing clearly without the aid of contact lenses or thick glasses you may be a candidate for the Verisyse Phakic IOL. Dr. Feinberg will perform a series of tests to determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. Candidates include people who meet the following criteria:

  • healthy eyes with no limiting eye disease, iris, pupil, or corneal abnormality, or history of retinal detachment.
  • your prescription is relatively stable , and your nearsightedness has not changed a large amount for more than six months prior to surgery.
  • you are not pregnant or nursing.

The goal of having a Verisyse IOL is to correct your nearsightedness when Lasik can’t be performed. Dr. Feinberg will select the appropriate lens power to correct your nearsightedness. Once the Verisyse IOL is implanted and your eye has healed, the light coming into your eye can correctly focus on the retina improving vision. The Verisyse IOL is implanted in one eye at a time and the second surgery can be done as quickly as a week apart. One of our patients describes the transition from contact lenses “it’s as if I were watching an analog t.v. all my life and now everything is in HD TV.” Please call us today to schedule an exam to see if this technology may be an option for you.
